Application Photo and Portrait

The point of interest with this project was to explore the differing expressions in portrait photographs when they are shot for a different purpose.

In this regard students from grade 10 at a Berlin school were asked whether they would feel like joining the project. Twentyfive students at the age of 16 agreed to participate. They would first sit for an application photograph, dressed how it deemed them accordingly, and a week later they would sit for a portrait and could choose one of their favourite outfits to wear. All pictures were taken at a seminar room within the school while in a neighbouring room the class had a lecture about proper applications for a job.
For each students not more than 6 exposures were used for the application photograph and the portrait respectively. The selection of the images was made by the photographer, though the students had their say too.

The project took place in collaboration with the Catholic School St. Franziskus in Berlin and teacher Christel Rosery. The idea was triggered by the seminar „Self-Expression and Authenticity" by Dr. Vera Dreyer, University of the Arts, Berlin.
